Use of mobile apps is governed by the terms of use in the licence agreement. Check these terms of use for permitted and prohibited uses, e.g. often terms permit individual use only.

Depending on the type of content, content within apps may be copied and communicated for educational purposes under the Copyright Agency Statutory Licence agreement for text and graphic works. For example:

  • Screenshots
  • Excerpts of text
  • Images, graphics, photos, etc.

If relying on the Statutory Licence agreement, access must be restricted to Curtin staff and students and any electronic communication of the material must include the electronic warning notice. The amount copied must not exceed the Copyright Agency Statutory Licence agreement limits.

For other uses, for example including screenshots in your thesis or research paper, it is likely you will need to ask permission of the copyright holder.
